Summary: The book "Piet Esser (1914-2004). Beeld van een mens, beeld van een tijd" is a photographic biography of one of the most important Dutch sculptors of the twentieth century. Esser's work can be admired in museum collections and art at numerous public spaces in the Netherlands. The book creates a stimulating impression of his life and work and uses photos that Esser took personally. These photos also provide an impression of the turbulent twentieth century that was so consciously experienced by Esser. Not only do we see his wife, his family, his relatives and friends, but we are obviously also privy to his art, others' art, the interiors of his houses and ateliers, cityscapes and monuments at home and abroad. The images are discussed using citations from Esser's interviews, letters, diaries and memoirs.
